This is not about me or a person. I think my cat may have gangegrene in his toe. It smells bad and the nail is greenish grey. It was fine a couple of days ago, but he wouldn't let me look at it until today. It's not swollen, but it looks a little gross. I've started washing it with hydrogen peroxide.

Is the skin around it turning black? I've heard that that is one of the indicators for gangrene....

It's hard to tell. He will barely let me look at it. I imagine it's the same for people as animals though, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. It was the nasty smell and color that has me worried.

I konw an infection will be hot but gangrene is dead tissue right? I would think then it would be cold. Do you have any neosporin type stuff? The dog had a cut on his nose and the vet had said we could use that.

It sounds like it could at least be a very bad infection.....

Gangrene is very nasty looking & smelly. Yep, the local site can be very warm, too. However, the eschar (dead tissue) isn't. It has a nauseating odor that is all it's own. Sounds like you are doing the right thing, wash with peroxide & keep an eye on it. If it's not doing any better, I'd check with the vet. I'd call them too & check if you can use neosporin or something similar. Might just be a bad infection.

I cleaned it really well with peroxide and there's pink skin under the guck. It does smell really nasty. I found the treatment for animals is the same as for people. Since I could clean the skin pink, I think it's just a very bad infection. I had no idea it could get so infected in only 2 days.

:yup: It's amazing how quickly a little wound can be badly infected.

He's much better today. I got it to bleed freely again - which I guess is part of the problem with gangrene. It doesn't smell 1/3 as bad. I think it's going to clear up now with no more problems.
