Ok I am trying really hard not to freak but it is is not easy. I noticed that Emily had a swollen area on her neck this afternoon when she turned away from me to look at the tv. It was really pronounced so I had her come to me so I could feel it. It was quite large and on thleft side of the front of her throat. I called the pedi and he stopped by after rounds. He actually cussed under his breath at he size of it. She has a little bit of a sore throat and the lump/gland doesn't seem to hurt too much. A little tender if really prodded. I am supposed to give her Augmentin and then call him thurs or sooner if it swells anymore of if she gets a temp. When I look this stuff up it all screams cancer. What is the liklihood of this. I know it could very well be nothing too but it wasn't at all noticeble til this afternoon and it is hard not soft. HELP??????

It's really, really hard to say unless you can see it & assess it. From what it sounds like, she may have some sort of infection? I've never known any physician to give Augmentin, an antibiotic, for anything cancerous or pre-cancerous. :headscrat
I would just keep an eye on it, give her the Augmentin as ordered and LOTS of fluids. Call the Pediatrician on Thursday or sooner if you see increased swelling or a Temp... as he ordered. (for MOM) Try to take a bunch of deep breaths & follow MD's orders. I know it's easier said than done, but I wouldn't panic at this time. Just keep an eye on her... from the sounds of it, the Augmentin should do the trick. Watch her temp & give her plenty of fluids... water & such.
Good luck! Let me know how she's doing. :hugs2:

Thanks. I am trying to be all calm and collected but it is still getting bigger and I will call him tomorrow if it hasn't gone down at all by the am. I will let you know. Thanks Kim for getting right back to me.:)
For what it's worth, I just got rid of one of those on my neck. I was a bit afraid myself because I thought the same things that are going through your head. Turns out that I had a sinus infection and didn't even realize it (since I'm so used to living with the symptoms, I tend to ignore them). It actually got bigger the first day or two after starting Augmentin, but finally went away at arounda week.
I hope that hers turns out to be that simple too -- keep us posted!

Haley gets lumps in her neck which are swollen lymphnodes with almost any infection she gets. It causes a large soft, but painful if you push on it lump almost directly under her ear.

I had a goiter on my neck, right against my throat. Mine was caused from a thyroid disorder. It is something that I had treatment for, had my thyroid zapped and even though I will be on meds to do what my thyroid should have, the goiter went away and I am perfectly healthy.
I will keep you in my prayers that it is nothing serious.

So, how's our little darlin' this morning?? :hugs2:
I agree with Dawn... there's a lot of upper respiratory ~ sinus ~ pharyngitis type things going around. About 6 wks ago I had a terrible upper respiratory infection along with what they termed pharyngitis. (Involved my throat, nasopharnyx and ears). Anyway, it took the full course of antibiotics & they gave me Allergra D for decongestant -- took the pressure off my eardrums -- but it finally went away.
Let me know how it's goin. Take care! :ghug:

Hey
I took her the doc this am because it was way bigger than yesterday. He wanted her to see an ENT asap but they wante him to order some tests first. Si we had 4 vials of blood drawn anad a chest x-ray plus an ultra sound of the lump on her neck. It is an inflamed lymph node adn very large adn really hard and does not move. It is not oainful and the sore throat is super minor and doesn't bother he. She has no fever, or runny nose or cough or congestion. The doc did not like the u/s results but the xray was fine. The labs will be in tomorrow am. He is definately sending us ccmc as soon as the labs are in even if they are good. He is really wottied about this lump and it is worrying me too. I have outlined it in ink now so that we can judge it again in the am. She was good through all but the needle but that is to be expected.I will let you know what tomorrow brings. Oh and he has pulled her off the antibiotic. He doesn't believe it is an infection causing this.
KIM - What is an ENT?

Hi there,
we went to the hematology/oncology dr at the connecticut childresn medical center on friday. They drew more blood adn really squeazed her lump like crazy. She(the doc) said that she was able to see the tiniest bit of puss on her left tonsil and will give her a round of antibiotics just to see if that will actually clear it up. If the lump goes down with this then we have little to worry about but if it doesn't then the big testing will begin. We go back again this friday for a follow up. Emily has had 4 doses of the med so far adn there is no change so far. I am hopefull but a little doubtful too. Part of being a mom and needing to worry I guess. Thanks for your hugs and prayers. I will let you know what happens.

Thank you all.
I have another question though. If this an infection on her tonsil then what could be causing the fatigue she has been complaining of? I did bring it up witth the doc adn she rean some labs but didn't really say anything about it.
After playing for a while ot walking a little ways she will get really sluggish an really complain of her legs being so tired. I have had to piggy back her enough times now that my neck and back are suffering from her weight.
Any ideas? this has been going on for about 10 days now.
