Hey Kim....

I have some questions about chicken pox that I'm wondering if you might have the answers for.

First of all, a little boy (4) that we're very good friends with, now has the chicken pox, since Tuesday I think. We were at their house on Monday night, him and Sydney shared cake off the same fork. What are the chances that Sydney will become infected? Should I be worried?

Second, if she is going to get them, what should I be watching for? And when should I expect to start seeing them?

When and how long are they contagious for?

What are the best ways to go about dealing with them, in regards to fever, itching and whatever else goes along with chicken pox??

Should I be concerned for myself, being pregnant? I've already had the chicken pox, many, many years ago, but can I still be affected? Or can it affect the unborn baby?

If you could let me know, that would be great, then at least I can be a little prepared for them. Thanks!!

Hey Leah, was Sydney vaccinated against chicken pox?

I posted this already but----all I am sure about is that since you have had them the baby should be fine. I was exposed when pg with Cori and Maci so I had to check on it. Luckily I am just immuned (never had them) so the baby was fine each time.

Michele, when is the chicken pox vaccination? I can't remember 12 or 18 months, or sooner? She goes for her 18 month needle next month.

I checked her immunization card and it doesn't say anything about the chicken pox vaccine anywhere on there. 12 months is for red measles, german measles and the mumps.

:hmm2: I think here (I used to work at the Health Dept.) they were Immunizing for Chicken pox at 12 months. :headscrat

Let's see what I can dig up for you so I have correct & specific info for ya, Leah. Back in a jiffy.... :hello:

Leah,

Here's a link to a pretty cool site for kids' health. I'm linking you directly to the Chicken Pox area. I sure hope Sydney doesn't have them. Poor sweetie! :ghug:

I think you are contaigious fof a few days before you actually break out and then about a week afterwards. And I KNOW pregnant women shouldn't be exposed, but can't remember why. Check with your doctor just in case.

That is an awesome article Kim....thank you so much!

But if I've already had the chicken pox, shouldn't I be safe? How am I supposed to stay away from Sydney if she gets them??

I think you are OK as long as you have had them. I'd talk with your OB/GYN to make sure. :yup:
